The Verdict (Internal Quality Score)

Grade A – Albanian Whole Chaste Tree Berry. Per our product specifications, these chaste tree berry capsules contain 100% whole, ground fruit of Vitex agnus-castus, the herb also sold as vitex (chasteberry), chaste berry and monk’s pepper, sourced from Albania (country center 41.15N, 20.17E). This vitex supplement is not an extract. Each 600 mg serving keeps the complete berry matrix: casticin, agnuside, clerodadienol diterpenes, a fatty oil rich in linoleic acid and peppery essential oils. Rated 9.4/10 for whole-berry integrity and label transparency.

Sensory Analysis of Our Vitex Berry Powder

Split a capsule and genuine chaste tree berry announces itself. Stale or substituted vitex does not. Here is what to look for.

  • Look: Dark brown to gray-brown powder with pale flecks of ground calyx, the papery caps that cup each dried berry. Whole chasteberries are the size of a peppercorn, and each carries its vitex seed inside a hard stone that goes into the grind. Fiber makes up 47 to 50% of the dried fruit in published lab work, so the powder feels dry and slightly grainy.
  • Smell: Resinous and sharp, then pepper, pine, and a cool eucalyptus note. That is the essential oil fraction, only about 0.5% of the fruit, led by 1,8-cineole, alpha-pinene, and sabinene (PubMed: vitex fruit essential oil analysis). The USP describes the powdered fruit as musty and slightly aromatic, so a musty base is normal. Fresh vitex berry powder keeps its sharp, piney top note. Old powder loses it.
  • Taste: Peppery heat first, then a dry, sage-like bitterness. The USP monograph for the powdered fruit describes the same sage-like taste. The vegan capsule keeps that bite off your palate.

How Does a Vitex Supplement Work?

Vitex (chasteberry) works upstream. The berry contains no hormones. Its phytochemicals act on signaling at the pituitary, the pea-sized master gland that also directs the thyroid and governs women’s reproductive systems.

  • The Herb: Vitex agnus-castus L., chaste tree (also spelled chastetree), a shrub of the mint family sourced from Albania. Its native range runs through the eastern Mediterranean, from Crete to Türkiye and the Levant, per Kew Plants of the World Online.
  • The Mechanism: Clerodadienol diterpenes act as a dopaminergic signal on the vitex berry’s main target, the D2 receptors of the pituitary, which slows prolactin release in laboratory models (vitex pharmacology review). Prolactin rises and falls across a normal cycle, including the luteal phase, the two weeks after you ovulate, and researchers are studying how it relates to breast tenderness before a period.
  • The Evidence: Research by Jarry et al. (1994) confirmed, in rat pituitary cells, that agnus castus (AC) fruit extract compounds bind dopamine receptors and lower prolactin release while leaving LH and FSH unchanged (PubMed: agnus castus dopamine study, PMID 7890021).

Vitex Agnus-Castus, Estrogen and Progesterone

Two more pathways show up in lab work. Flavonoids such as apigenin favor estrogen receptor beta (PubMed PMID 14648399), and vitex extracts activate mu-opioid receptors tied to mood (PMID 16439081). The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center chasteberry monograph summarizes all three routes. So does chasteberry raise estrogen? It contains no estrogen, and human data on estrogen and progesterone levels are thin and mixed. Where studies report a shift in luteal phase progesterone, researchers tie it to the prolactin effect.

Chasteberry Research: What the Evidence Shows

The strongest human evidence for vitex (chasteberry) comes from a standardized chasteberry extract, not whole chaste tree berry powder. We say that plainly because many vitex supplements blur it.

  • A 2019 meta-analysis of three double-blind trials (520 women) found that women taking standardized vitex extracts reported more relief from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms than women on placebo (Csupor et al. 2019 vitex meta-analysis, PMID 31780016).
  • In a BMJ trial, 170 women took a dry vitex agnus castus extract (Ze 440) or placebo for three cycles. The extract group reported more improvement in PMS symptoms such as irritability, mood swings, anger, headache, and breast fullness than the placebo group (PubMed: BMJ 2001 agnus castus trial).
  • The NCCIH chasteberry fact sheet rates those PMS studies low-to-moderate quality and says chasteberry might reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms such as breast pain or tenderness. NCCIH finds too little reliable evidence on infertility and only preliminary data on menopausal symptoms.

Those findings come from extract trials. They do not predict what whole berry powder will do for any one person.

Why Do Clinical Trials Use Vitex Extract Instead of Whole Berry?

Extracts are easier to standardize, so researchers can repeat a dose exactly. Those trials did not test whole chaste tree berry powder, so we do not convert extract doses into berry weights. The EU herbal monograph on Vitex agnus-castus recognizes both forms and lists powdered agnus castus fruit as a preparation from European traditional medicine for minor symptoms in the days before menstruation (premenstrual syndrome). Follow the serving on this label.

Whole Chaste Tree Berry Powder vs. Standardized Extract

  • Whole chaste tree berry powder (this product): the entire dried fruit, ground, with the fiber, essential oils, casticin, agnuside, and diterpenes behind its biological activity.
  • Dry extract capsules or tablets: the format of many brands. Labels often print an “equivalent” herb weight, such as 1,000 mg, which describes the raw herb used, not the capsule fill.
  • Fluid extract or liquid tincture: alcohol-soluble compounds in a dropper bottle, sharply peppery.

How to Take Chaste Tree Berry Capsules

Vitex Dosage, Timing and the Three-Cycle Window

  • Serving: 2 capsules (600 mg) once daily with water, or as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Timing: Herbalists traditionally give vitex in the morning. No study shows one time of day works better, so pick a time you will keep.
  • Patience: Trials measured change across three menstrual cycles, and NCCIH notes chasteberry fruit extract has been used safely in research for up to 3 months. Take the capsules every day, including days without symptoms, and track your symptoms for three cycles before you judge this vitex supplement. Steady sleep, diet, and exercise habits make that symptom log easier to read.
  • Opening the capsule: Herbalists once simmered crushed chaste berries as a tea. You can still empty the chaste tree berry powder into tea or food, but expect a peppery, sage-bitter taste. Each supplement capsule skips the bitterness.

Critical Usage: Vitex Supplement Side Effects and Who Should Avoid It

Every herb that acts on the body has limits, and herbal supplements are no exception. Read this before your first two capsules.

Chasteberry Side Effects Reported in Studies

Chasteberry is generally well tolerated in the short term. A systematic review of vitex adverse events found that side effects were mild and reversible. Reported side effects include:

  • Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, or other digestive upset
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Itching, skin rash, hives, or acne
  • Changes in menstrual timing or flow
  • Severe allergic reactions with face swelling or trouble breathing (frequency unknown). Stop the chasteberry and seek care right away.

Who Should Avoid Vitex Agnus-Castus?

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding and Trying to Conceive

Do not use vitex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. NCCIH says use during pregnancy or breastfeeding may be unsafe, and the EU monograph does not recommend it. Chasteberry can shift prolactin, the hormone behind breast milk, and the LactMed chasteberry entry warns that high doses might lower milk supply. This product is not a fertility treatment. If you are trying to get pregnant, ask your clinician before you take vitex.

Medications and Drug Interactions

Because vitex acts on dopamine and estrogen signaling, the EU monograph states that drug interactions with dopamine agonists, dopamine antagonists, estrogens, and antiestrogens cannot be excluded. Patients on these drugs should talk with a prescriber before combining them, and list all vitamins and supplements they take. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements publishes free fact sheets to help with that conversation.

Hormonal Drugs

Birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and fertility drugs. Preclinical work summarized by Memorial Sloan Kettering suggests chasteberry may reduce the effect of contraceptives and hormone therapy.

Dopamine-Related Drugs

Bromocriptine and other dopamine agonists, Parkinson’s medicines and antipsychotic drugs that block D2 receptors.

Hormone-Sensitive Conditions and Pituitary Disorders

NCCIH warns that chasteberry may not be safe for women with hormone-sensitive conditions. Those include breast cancer and uterine or ovarian cancer. The EU monograph adds a history of pituitary disorders and notes that vitex can mask the symptoms of a prolactin-secreting pituitary tumor. This product is not a treatment for PCOS, endometriosis, or severe premenstrual mood symptoms such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Those conditions need care from healthcare professionals, not supplements. Use under age 18 has not been established.

Identity matters. When scientists in Japan tested 11 vitex products, including 10 dietary supplements, two chasteberry supplements had no detectable agnuside, casticin, or both, and one appeared to contain a different species, Vitex negundo (2019 vitex supplement quality study). The USP standard for the powdered fruit calls for at least 0.08% casticin and 0.05% agnuside on a dried basis.

Origin: Albanian Chaste Tree Berries

Our chaste tree berry is sourced from Albania, on the Adriatic and Ionian coasts of the Balkan Peninsula. Kew places Albania in the shrub’s introduced range, with the native range farther east. The plant thrives on coastal thickets, gravelly stream banks and alluvial flats from sea level to about 600 meters, blooms in lilac spikes from June to September and ripens its fruits for an autumn harvest. Albania ranks among the world’s top 25 exporters of medicinal and aromatic herbs, shipping 186 species worth about 44 million euros in 2020, roughly a third of it to the United States.

Chasteberry in Greek Mythology and History

Theophrastus called the shrub agnos, and the Latin castus repeats the meaning, so agnus-castus reads as “chaste, chaste.” Athenian women spread the shrub’s branches on their bedding during the Thesmophoria, the festival of Demeter, and the tree was linked to Hera at her temple on Samos. Medieval monks reportedly used ground vitex berries as a pepper substitute, the origin of the name monk’s pepper.

Vitex Agnus-Castus FAQ

What does a vitex supplement do?

A vitex supplement supplies chasteberry, an herb traditionally used to support menstrual cycle comfort, premenstrual balance, and female reproductive health. Research centers on prolactin signaling at the pituitary, and most data come from extracts rather than whole-berry supplements. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed hormonal imbalance. For supplementary reading, see our guide to female hormonal balance.

Does this vitex supplement contain hormones?

No. These capsules hold only ground chaste tree berry in vegetable cellulose shells. The berry’s flavonoids act on hormone signaling, but the product contains no estrogen, progesterone, or other hormones.

Can I take vitex with birth control or hormone therapy?

Ask your prescriber first. The EU monograph says interactions with estrogens and antiestrogens cannot be excluded, and preclinical data suggest chasteberry may reduce the effect of hormonal contraceptives. Never stop or change a prescription on your own.

How is vitex different from black cohosh or soy isoflavones?

Soy isoflavones are phytoestrogens. Black cohosh is a root traditionally used for menopause symptoms. Chaste tree berry acts higher up, on pituitary dopamine signaling, so it is traditionally chosen for premenstrual comfort. For the years before menopause, read our article on chasteberry for perimenopause or our notes on dong quai and black cohosh for women.

Can you get chasteberry from foods, or does it lower cortisol?

No common food supplies chaste berries, so capsules are the practical route. There is no reliable human evidence that chasteberry lowers cortisol, and no human trial supports calling it an anti-inflammatory herb. We make no such claim.

What are the biggest myths about vitex?

Many health benefits claimed for vitex online are not backed by science. These myths come up most.

  • Myth: Vitex is a hormone. Fact: It contains none and works through pituitary signaling.
  • Myth: Vitex is a fertility treatment. Fact: NCCIH finds the evidence on infertility too weak to judge.
  • Myth: Chasteberry capsules prevent insect bites. Fact: Repellent studies used topical plant preparations, not capsules.
  • Myth: More is better. Fact: Stay with the label dosage of 2 capsules. No evidence shows more works better, and the side effects above still apply.

These chaste tree berry capsules, sometimes listed as vitex agnus castus capsules or agnus castus capsules, hold one plain ingredient: whole Albanian vitex berry, 300 mg per capsule, in 60 vegan caps. No extract, no blend, no supplementary fillers. Vegan and labeled with its country of origin, this is a whole-berry vitex supplement for women who read labels.
