THE VERDICT (INTERNAL QUALITY SCORE): MULLEIN LEAF POWDER WILDCRAFTED IN ALBANIA

Grade A (BTYRH Internal Score) Wildcrafted Leaf Powder. Our grade checks four things: species, plant part, origin, and a heavy metal panel. This powder is milled from whole Verbascum thapsus L. leaves gathered wild in Albania (country center about 41°N, 20°E). Per our supplier’s label, this Albanian mullein is wild-collected, not farmed. About 250 plant species are wild harvested in Albania for medicinal and aromatic use, per Bazina et al. (2007). Nothing is extracted from the leaf. Nothing is added. The lot passed the heavy metal panel on its certificate of analysis. – Back To Your Roots Herbs Research Group

SENSORY ANALYSIS: POWDERED LEAF STRAIGHT FROM THE POUCH

We opened this lot of mullein powder at the bench and took notes.

  • Look: Soft sage-green powder with pale flecks of leaf fiber. Light and fluffy. Pinch it, and it feels like fine felt. Those are the leaf hairs.
  • Smell: Dry hay and cut grass with a faint sweet note. No must.
  • Taste: Mild, green leaf flavor, then faintly sweet. Strained as tea, it drinks like a soft green tea without the bitterness or caffeine.

What does mullein tea taste like? Mild, grassy, and a little sweet. Many people add raw honey or lemon. The green comes from chlorophyll, so a tan color often means old or sun-faded leaf.

HOW DOES MULLEIN LEAF POWDER WORK?

Mullein leaf powder works as a whole herb. The pouch holds every compound the dried leaf holds, in its natural ratio. Strained tea carries the water-soluble share. No single mechanism of action has been confirmed in people. Here is what researchers have measured.

Mullein Is Common Mullein: Folk Names and Records

What is mullein? Mullein is the common name for Verbascum thapsus L., also called great mullein. Folk names include flannel plant, velvet dock, and cow’s lungwort. The USDA PLANTS database lists it as VETH. The leaf was once listed in the U.S. National Formulary as Verbasci Folia (Sayre, 1917).

Can you drink mullein herbs? Yes. The dried leaves of mullein are steeped as a tea or infusion, and mullein is caffeine-free.

The Herb: Verbascum thapsus From Albania

This Verbascum species is a biennial in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae. First-year plants form a rosette of large, felted leaves. Second-year plants send up a tall stalk of yellow blooms. It is native to Europe, northern Africa, and western and central Asia (Gupta et al., 2022). Spain alone records 10 Verbascum species in folk use (Blanco-Salas et al., 2021).

Albania exported about 8,800 tonnes of dried medicinal and aromatic plants in 2003, led by sage, thyme, and oregano (Bazina et al., 2007). Our mullein comes from that same wild-collection trade.

The Mechanism: Verbascoside, Aucubin and Branched Hairs

The plant contains flavonoids, iridoid and phenylethanoid glycosides, saponins, vitamin C, and minerals (Gupta et al., 2022). Brownstein et al. (2017) found these glycosides spread unevenly across Verbascum leaves, stems, and roots. Balkrishna et al. (2026) built an HPLC test for two markers, verbascoside and luteolin. The iridoid aucubin turns up in mullein preparations too.

Then there are the leaf hairs. Khan et al. (2020) found the leaves covered in branched, star-shaped hairs called trichomes. That is the flannel feel, and it is why we strain every cup. Loose hairs can tickle the throat and the mucous membranes of the mouth.

The Evidence: What the Lab Studies Measured

Research by Khan et al. (2020) confirmed the leaf structure and measured the plant’s minerals, from calcium and magnesium to trace cadmium. A plant that pulls metals from soil should be tested, and our lot passed its heavy metal panel.

Most published work is experimental (Gupta et al., 2022), such as the lab bioassays Turker and Camper (2002) ran on mullein extracts. Turker and Gurel (2005) noted that dried leaves, capsules, and alcohol extracts were already sold in U.S. health stores. None of these studies tested a leaf powder in people.

Does mullein actually help your lungs? The leaf has a long traditional use for respiratory support in European and North American herbalism, but human trials are scarce, even for the flower. We sell this leaf powder as a traditional herbal tea, not as a treatment for any lung condition. Our guide to mullein’s traditional uses covers the history.

Mullein Leaf vs. Mullein Flower vs. Root Powder

What is the difference between mullein leaf and root powder? Different parts hold different chemistry. Balkrishna et al. (2026) detected 48 compounds in the flower spike, 40 in the leaf, and 29 in the root. The leaf is the classic tea part. The flower is what European herbal monographs cover and the usual base for mullein oil. This pouch holds leaf only.

CRITICAL USAGE: SERVING SIZE AND SAFETY

Start low. One serving is 1 level teaspoon of mullein powder (about 1.5 g) in 1 cup of water. Use up to 2 servings a day, about 3 g total, unless your health care provider sets a different dose. For scale, the European monograph for mullein flower tea uses 1.5 to 2 g per 150 ml.

How Do You Use Mullein Powder?

Brew it as tea, stir it into powder blends, fill empty tea bags for loose leaf tea on the go, or simmer it into a syrup.

Brewing Method

Hot water and a fine filter are all you need.

Mullein Leaf Tea
  1. Boil 1 cup (8 fl oz) of water. Let it rest for 1 minute.
  2. Stir in 1 level teaspoon of leaf powder.
  3. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Strain through a paper coffee filter. A mesh tea ball lets the leaf hairs through.
  5. Refrigerate leftover tea and finish it within 24 hours.

Raw honey, lemon, or fresh ginger pair well. Herbal tea blends often add thyme, peppermint, nettle leaf, eucalyptus leaf, or elecampane root. Never give honey to babies under 1.

Cinnamon Stick and Clove Variation

Simmer 1 cinnamon stick and 2 cloves in a small pot of water for 5 minutes, then take it off the heat and steep. Our Ceylon cinnamon powder works too.

Smoothies, Capsules and Powder Blends

The powdered leaf disappears into a smoothie. Add 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon to fruit or greens powder blends. Unstrained powder keeps the leaf hairs, which some people find scratchy, so start small. Capsules, tinctures, and extracts are different products with different strengths. For a home syrup, simmer 1 tablespoon of mullein powder and 2 tablespoons of dried elderberries in 2 cups of water until the liquid halves. Strain, add raw honey, and refrigerate up to 2 weeks.

Storage and Shelf Life

How should you store mullein powder? Sealed, cool, dry, and out of direct light. Humidity makes fluffy leaf powder clump. Use it within 12 months of opening.

Side Effects and Who Should Skip This Herb

Reported mullein side effects are uncommon. When Europe’s herbal medicines committee reviewed the flower, none had been reported. With the leaf, watch for:

  • Throat irritation from unstrained leaf hairs
  • Skin irritation from handling mullein leaves
  • Allergic reactions to the plant

Stop if you notice a rash, itching, or stomach upset. Does mullein interact with foods or drinks? No food or drink interactions are documented. What should I do if I accidentally use too much mullein? Stop, drink water, and watch for stomach upset. If you suspect an overdose, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Can you drink mullein tea every day? Some people do for a few weeks at a time, but long-term data are thin. In a 2021 review of a mullein feed additive, the European Food Safety Authority found aucubin at 0.004 percent in a tincture made from mullein. Citing the genotoxic potential of aucubin-type iridoids, it drew no conclusion for long-lived animals. Take breaks, and ask your health care provider before months of daily use.

When to Ask Your Health Care Provider First

Talk with your health care provider first if you take prescription medicines, manage a chronic health condition, or have plant allergies. Cleveland Clinic advises discussing any supplement with your doctor first.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Safety data are lacking. Skip it unless your provider approves.

Drug Interactions, Medicines and Kids

Data on drug interactions with this herb are sparse, and sparse data is not proof of safety. Keep your pharmacist informed if you take medicines. The European monograph does not recommend the flower tea for kids under 12. We hold this leaf powder to the same line.

Why Plant Part and Origin Matter in Mullein Supplements

Leaf, flower, and root are not the same ingredient, and wild plants vary with soil and weather. Where should you buy mullein powder? From a seller that names the species, plant part, country, and test status. Ours lists Verbascum thapsus L., leaf, Albania, and a passing heavy metal panel. It is vegan and caffeine-free, with no added gluten. Some green powders do not list all four.

The FDA regulates dietary supplements as a category of food. Heavy metal panels often follow USP General Chapter 2232 for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
