Cancer Bush (Sutherlandia frutescens) is perhaps the most commonly used herb in Southern Africa and is employed in treating wasting in HIV patients. It is commonly called the “cancer bush” because of its traditionally proven effectiveness in cancer prevention.
S. frutescens was used as a supportive treatment for mental and psychological stress, including irritability, depression, nervousness, and depression. Widows of slain Zulu warriors employed S. frutescens as a gentle tranquilizer during the period. The Sotho name motlepelo signifies ‘bringing back the heart’ meaning that the plant is a conventional treatment for emotional shock and stress.
