Periwinkle (Vinca major)
Periwinkle Is A Powerful Memory Enhancer
Periwinkle is building its reputation in the United States, due to its popularity in Europe and Japan. Since the late 1960s, Periwinkle has been under research for its brain-boosting potential. There is a specific alkaloid it possesses called “vinpocetine.” Vinpocetine increases brain health through its antioxidant properties, which, along with the inhibition of PDE1, not only promotes blood flow but also may protect the brain and nerve cells from damage should blood flow decline for some reason. Periwinkle helps because it is a sodium channel blocker, meaning it can stop the accumulation of sodium in injured nerve cells and also help to restore cognitive functioning.
Vinpocetine increases brain health
The potential for Periwinkle and or it’s alkaloid vinpocetine to treat cognitive impairment and brain trauma was demonstrated in a study of retired NFL players. During the investigation, sophisticated brain imaging showed an increase in blood flow in the brain. At the same time, testing of the men revealed significant improvements in scores of memory, reasoning, attention, and information processing speed and accuracy.
Numerous scientific studies have shown Periwinkle to be a benefit for the prevention and improvement of many different kinds of ailments. It enhances cognitive functions, including those involving long-and-short term memory, and it has also been shown to be valuable in protecting heart, visual, and hearing functions.
Periwinkle is a potent memory enhancer. It achieves this principally by facilitating cerebral metabolism and improving blood flow to the brain. It works by causing mild dilation of blood vessels, thereby allowing for increased cerebral blood flow, which results in increased oxygenation and glucose utilization.
Periwinkle is the ideal candidate not only for the improvement and prevention of specific disease processes in need of increased blood flow and oxygenation, but also for athletes who want to enhance their performance by improving brain oxygenation, such as skiers, mountain climbers, and high-altitude hikers.

“Yes, it is very true, and I need to share my family’s experience with this wonderful herb! My two cousins, who had endometrial (stage 3) and cervical (stage 4) cancers, were advised by my mother, who was an herbalist, to take periwinkle tea using its roots.
At least three cups a day or as much as they could, and after six(6) months, their cancers went down to stage one after a year they were completely healed.
It’s been 20 years now, and both my cousins are very healthy and still maintaining to drink their teas regularly. Kudos to Periwinkle.”
Periwinkle Side Effects: Using periwinkle in the whole herb form does not pose a danger of interaction with blood thinners, however taking isolated extracts of vincamine and the chemical drug vinpocetine can pose risks and are not suited to unsupervised long-term use.
Note: Our Periwinkle is in its wholesome state (leaves) and wild-harvested from Bulgaria.
