Dunaliella vs. Spirulina
Dunaliella salina is a unicellular green alga of the genus and was studied since the early 19th century, and numerous species were characterized and classified since then. In general, Dunaliella salina species are ubiquitous in saline environments, and often multiple species occur in the same habitat.
This broad distribution of species of the genus Dunaliella salina may be contributed to their tolerance to a wide range of salinities, light intensities, and temperatures as well as their ability to survive for many years among salt crystals. To cope with these extreme environments, Dunaliella salina produces very high levels of antioxidant molecules.
On a per – gram basis, Dunaliella salina has more than twice the chlorophyll, five times the mineral content, and more than 6000 times the carotenoid antioxidants content of spirulina. Furthermore, the Dunaliella salina soft-cell membrane makes it easily digestible, compared with other microalgae that have hard cell walls.
Dunaliella From the Dead Sea
The key to Dunaliella salina high carotenoid content is its saline environment. The higher the salinity, the higher the beta-carotene concentration. This organism’s saline requirements also make it easier to grow, because it has few natural competitors in the high-salt environment. Although it is technically a green microalga, the carotenoids (which are pigments) can mask the chlorophyll, at times giving this alga a red or orange hue.
Dunaliella salina was recognized as “Ancient Healthcare.” Algae is a nutrient-dense natural food and medicine that has been used safely for thousands of years by Aztecs, some African peoples, and South Pacific Islanders. Examples of popular edible algae-promoting good health used around the world include Spirulina and Chlorella. Dunaliella salina, however, offers many unique benefits over these other algae.
|Dunaliella salina||Spirulina and Chlorella|
|Soft wall microalgae||Fibrous or hard wall microalgae|
|Easy breakdown maximizing nutrient absorption||Difficult breakdown limiting nutrient absorption|
|Grown in a nutrient-rich marine(brine) environment||Grown in a nutrient-poor freshwater environment|
|Mineral-rich||Contains much lower levels of minerals|
|Carotenoid-rich||Contains much lower levels of carotenoids|
|Nutrient||Dunaliella per 100g||Spirulina per 100g||Raw Carrots per 100g|
|Alpha-carotene||53.1 – 102.4mg||0.0||2.8mg|
|Lutein & Zeaxanthin||54.3 – 97.6mg||0.0||0.2mg|
|Cryptoxanthin||23.4 – 46.5mg||0.0||0.1mg|
One of this alga’s most valuable characteristics is its antioxidant effect. In one recent rat study, for example, markers of antioxidant activity were significantly increased in rats receiving natural beta-carotene from Dunaliella salina. Another study focused on the antioxidant effects of Dunaliella salina in eye health. In this mouse study, researchers demonstrated that the algae could protect the cornea from UVB-induced radiation damage. It does so by decreasing oxidation and increasing antioxidant activity in the cornea.
Dunaliella salina has also attracted the interest of cancer researchers. When rats with fibrosarcoma were given Dunaliella Salina, their tumors showed signs of regression. Mice with cancer in the upper digestive tract were given high doses of Dunaliella salina; their cancer was inhibited by 55%. Mice with breast tumors also benefited from Dunaliella salina treatment; they had significantly fewer tumors than mice who were not given Dunaliella salina. In vitro studies also show promise for Dunaliella salina as a potential cancer treatment.
