Damiana – Turnera diffusa has strong claims as a great sexual rejuvenator in lethargy of the sexual organs, whether the result of abuse or senility. Damiana – Turnera diffusa use, or administration, should be with care, as the claims are justified by many who know of its influence.
Damiana – Turnera diffusa is indigenous to Texas and found in Baja California, South America, and the West Indies. The small yellow-flowered shrub has long, broad, obovate, light green leaves, with few hairs on the rib; frequently with reddish twigs. Damiana – Turnera diffusa plant has an aromatic odor and contains volatile oil with a warm, bitter, camphor-like taste, two resins, a bitter principle (damianin), tannin, sugar, and albuminoids.
Damiana Essential Oil
One study that investigated the effects of over 150 herbs for their relative capacity to compete with oestradiol and progesterone binding to intracellular receptors identified Damiana – Turnera diffusa as a herb that binds to intracellular progesterone receptors, exerting a neutral effect and also exerting weak oestrogen agonist activity. It has reported that delta cadinene is a testosterone inducer and 1,8cineole is a testosterone hydroxylase inducer. A study analyzing the constituents of the essential oils found in various Damiana – Turnera diffusa samples identified that fresh and dry samples contained both compounds, but wild plants contained more deltacadinene than cultivated plants. The action of these constituents may support the common belief that Damiana – Turnera diffusa is useful as an aphrodisiac.
Damiana Other Uses
In practice, Damiana – Turnera diffusa is sometimes used to treat anxiety and depression associated with hormonal changes (e.g. menopause) or where there is a sexual factor involved. Damiana – Turnera diffusa is also used as a mild stimulant and aphrodisiac, to enhance stamina generally, and for nervous dyspepsia and constipation.
Dr. W. H. Myers of Philadelphia writes concerning Damiana – Turnera diffusa: “I have given it quite an extensive trial in my practice, and as a result, I find that in cases of partial or other sexual debilities, Damiana – Turnera diffusa success is universal. I pronounce Damiana – Turnera diffusa is the most effective and only remedy that in my hands had a successful result in all cases.
Sexual dysfunction or decreased libido
Damiana – Turnera diffusa has been used traditionally for sexual dysfunction or as an aphrodisiac to enhance sexual activity. Scientific studies in experimental models provide preliminary support for its use in these conditions. One in vivo study established that Damiana – Turnera diffusa fluid extract significantly improves the copulatory performance of sexually sluggish animals, but does not affect normal functioning ones. The effect appears to be dosedependent, as positive results were obtained only when the highest dose (1 mL/kg) was administered.
One clinical study of unknown design compared a herbal combination product consisting of ginseng, Ginkgo, damiana, larginine and a variety of vitamins and minerals with placebo in 77 female volunteers. After four weeks, 73.5% of the women in the treatment group reported an increase in sexual satisfaction compared with 37.2% receiving a placebo.
