Passiflora Incarnata herb is a nervine, sedative, antispasmodic, and anxiolytic herb. It has the “most” defined sedating effect of all nervines. The significant indication of the need for passionflower is circular thinking that causes insomnia. When you can’t shut off your mind at night, laying in bed thinking about the day, yesterday, tomorrow, last month, next month, what if this, and if only that. Passionflower is a climbing plant native to South America and the East Indies. Because of its unique and handsome flowers, it is a popular ornamental in Italy and Germany, where it is grown on sunny verandas and walls.
The plant owes its name to the shape of its flowers. In the corolla center, there is a dense, threaded wreath of crimson accessory petals that become much darker towards the center. This threaded wreath has been compared to a “crown of thorns.” The whole herb is used in medicine. Its main active constituents are reported to be flavonoids and maltol, a pyrone methyl carbonic acid. Harman alkaloids do not appear to play a significant role as they cannot be detected in the official varieties.
Passionflower is a mild sedative and hypnotic that is unlikely to suffice alone but is used as an additive. Passionflower can, therefore, be found in numerous tea mixtures and compound phytopharmaceuticals. It also is used for stress-induced headaches, bruxism (teeth grinding).
