Mukombero roots, also known as Mondia whitei or “white ginger,” is a robust forest climber, which has been used in African (Kenya) traditional medicine for centuries.

Mukombero roots are mainly used in medical treatment, but the leaves and the entire plant have been utilized. Mukombero (Mondia whitei) has a pleasant aromatic character and taste, not unlike cinnamon and vanilla.

Throughout Africa, specifically Kenya, dried Mukombero roots are chewed, and the sap swallowed as an aphrodisiac. Mukombero (White Ginger) roots are used in Zimbabwe in a preparation known as vuka-vuka (Shona, which translates as wake-up, wake-up).

In South Africa (Kenya), the Zulu call Mukombero (uMondi), from which the genus gets its name.

Advantages of Mukombero Roots

Mukombero roots are used in tonics, as an appetite stimulant, against abdominal pains, constipation, and heartburn treatment (Watt and Breyer-Brandwijk, 1962; Hutchings et al., 1996). Mukombero root extracts have shown an androgenic effect in male rats (Watcho et al., 2004).

Mukombero (White Ginger) roots are from the Periplocaceae family and have been used by many traditional medicine practitioners to manage Erectile dysfunction (ED). Mukombero (Mondia whitei) is used to increase libido and control low sperm count.

Lampiao et al. investigated motility parameters on the aqueous administration to human spermatozoa in vitro. Results showed significantly enhanced total motility as well as progressive motility in a time-dependent manner.

These support the use of Mukombero roots, especially in men affected with asthenozoospermia.

According to Suresh-Kumar et al., the aqueous and hexane extract of Mukombero showed sexual enhancement in sexually inexperienced male rats.

This is due to reducing the sexually inexperienced males’ hesitation time towards receptive females, as indicated by the significant decrease in the ML.

This suggests that the aqueous and hexane extract of Mukombero roots may act by inducing changes in levels of neurotransmitters, modulating the action of these neurotransmitters on their target cells, or by increasing androgen levels.

It confirms the adrenergic effect of aqueous and hexane extracts of Mukombero on chronic administration in vivo in rats.
