Part of conventional Southeast Asian medicine, Black Tongkat Ali (Polyalthia bullata) is a powerful herbal remedy. It works for various ailments, including erectile dysfunction, fevers, bacterial infections, and so on. Studies show that Black Tongkat Ali can increase body composition, relieves stress, although research in such fields is limited.
Tongkat Ali For Stress Relief
Tongkat Ali Black can reduce the stress hormones in our body, thereby decreasing anxiety and improving mood. A study in 60+ older individuals with stress showed that supplementing with Black Tongkat Ali (200mg) daily decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva by 16 percent instead of those who took a placebo. Several participants further reported significantly reduced anger, tension, and stress after consuming Black Tongkat Ali.
Tongkat Ali Enhances Body Composition
Black Tongkat Ali is claimed to enhance athletic performance, as well as boost muscle mass. Thanks to the many compounds it contains, eurycolactone, eurycomaoside, and eurycomanone—these quassinoids help the body use energy more effectively, improve endurance, and reduce fatigue.
A 5-week study in several men participating in a muscle and strength training program discovered that those who consumed 100mg Black Tongkat Ali per day had significantly greater boosts in lean body mass than those receiving a placebo. Furthermore, they lost more fat compared to participants taking a placebo.
Another 5-week study in older participants showed that supplementing with 400mg Black Tongkat Ali per day enhanced muscular strength significantly compared to a placebo.
Does Tongkat Ali Have Any Side Effects?
Because insufficient studies have tested Black Tongkat Ali’s effects on humans, not enough is proven about its safety in terms of long-term and/or regular use. Typically, 200mg Tongkat Ali was used per day for up to 9 months in most studies. Noted side effects comprise anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.
Also, Tongkat Ali is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women to use and for children and those with certain medical conditions. People who have poor immune systems should totally avoid taking Black Tongkat Ali. It can interact with several medications (e.g., blood pressure medication, antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, drugs that lower insulin or blood sugar levels, immunosuppressant drugs, etc.).
Tongkat Ali Dosage
One study demonstrated that consuming 300mg of Black Tongkat Ali daily is safe, similar to taking a placebo. Another study suggests that consuming 1.2g of Tongkat Ali daily is considered safe for healthy adults. However, this amount hasn’t been used in research. On top of that, no studies have examined Black Tongkat Ali’s long-term use, making it uncertain whether the herb is safe over long-term uses.
